Seriously, the most valuable advice given to me as an affiliate marketer – and that is being moved forward to you today – is to respect your audience at all times. They are making you part of their lives and are prepared to put money into your pocket. In exchange, it is your duty to give them meaningful content that addresses their wants and needs and follow up with affiliate offers that meet these objectives. Do this and you'll have all the success as an affiliate marketer you've ever dreamed of.

Hey, thanks for the great post. I’ve been following Pat Flynn and love his “give and it shall be given unto you” attitude..my perception anyway. At 50, with a high school education, I’m trying to learn affiliate marketing from information online. What I’ve gleened so far is to focus on giving the best, most honest information, like your Parents would give you. In exchange for your efforts rewards will come.
1: How much setup are you willing to do? Of the two, affiliate marketing requires less in the way of direct setup. You don’t need to contact suppliers, you just need to sign up for an affiliate network. You need to set up a website with both, but an affiliate marketer can use a simple blog, while a dropshipper needs a storefront. Dropshipping also requires more internal infrastructure to handle transactions and payments, including a business bank account to keep funds separate from personal funds.
Targeting – Digital marketing enables marketers to dial in a targeted audience like never before. StudioPress itself is somewhat of a niche product as it is targeted to existing WordPress users who found setting up and managing a WordPress site too difficult or time-consuming. Another thing that I didn’t mention is that if someone doesn’t have to sign up to your email list and they click on your affiliate link you will earn a commission if they make a purchase but you will not have access to their name and email information. They will basically be one time buyers for you because you didn’t capture their name and email address first.

This is extremely helpful information for somebody who is a newbie blogger! I’ve been looking for an all inclusive “guide” to explain affiliate marketing and this is the best I’ve found. Quick question for you – when you talk about the cookie expiration date, is that from the date that you post your review/recommendation or from the date that the reader clicks on the link? For example, the affiliate links you posted in this post are well over 90 days old but if I click on one of them now and buy that product, do you still get paid? Just curious how that works.
One major disadvantage of affiliate marketing is that there’s virtually no customer loyalty on its own. You can build loyalty to your blog, but most affiliate sites are narrow niches and are not designed for long-term readers. I might look up faucet reviews and read a blog about them, then click their link to Amazon to buy a faucet, but you can bet I’m not going to bookmark and keep coming back to that faucet blog. If I want to buy another one of those faucets, I’m going straight to Amazon, and you’re not getting the referral for that second sale.
