Create a time-sensitive promotion that relates to customers’ interests. Offer a discount on the same category of items that they bought in the week before. Living Social frequently uses expiring deals in their email automations, emphasizing how little time is left to snag the savings. They could take it a step further by offering personalized recommendations based on users’ browsing behavior.
Whilst a bulk email marketing approach can have a positive effect upon click-through rates or overall traffic levels, what is this worth if the traffic is not of the right quality? There is no point spending money on generating traffic that isn’t going to convert into a sale, or whatever your end goal is. Targeted email marketing can deliver the relevant, high-quality traffic you need to improve chances of conversion.

While this is mostly just a legacy feature from pre-Zapier times, the native integrations can enable connections that are not possible on Zapier. Our recommendation would be to search on Zapier for the tools that you currently use, and if they’re all on there, choose one of the email marketing tools above that provides the most triggers and actions.

Despite its name, the CAN-SPAM Act doesn’t apply just to bulk email. It covers all commercial messages, which the law defines as “any electronic mail message the primary purpose of which is the commercial advertisement or promotion of a commercial product or service,” including email that promotes content on commercial websites. The law makes no exception for business-to-business email. That means all email – for example, a message to former customers announcing a new product line – must comply with the law.
Watchfinder reexamined their Google Analytics to understand better how to engage their customers. They found that only less than 1% of customers completed a purchase on their first visit. By creating customer personas, they were able to accurately identify customers more likely to buy and target ads specifically to that market segment. The result an increase in average order value by 13% and an increase in ROI by 1300% in 6 months.

According to Amanda Zantal-Wiener, writing for Hubspot, “In the email, The Bowery Presents pulled shows from New York venues – where I purchased tickets for many events when I lived there – for artists similar to the ones I saw live. And when I finally purchased tickets to see one of these artists in Boston? It re-personalized my emails to let me know about shows there.”
Rather than relying on a series of commands listed one after another, GetResponse utilizes a more engaged and visual approach: Users drag and drop actions into the workflow, directly linking triggers and commands in a way that feels more like completing a connect-the-dots than setting up automated emails. This simplifies what can be an otherwise complex process and makes for one element of the GetResponse user experience that beats out MailChimp in terms of convenience.

Cuuver’s James Nuttall agrees that the subject line should be enticing. Saying, “No matter how great your content is, there is no point in writing any of it if the people you send it to aren’t tempted to open the email in the first place; the best way to ensure they do this is to have a subject header which grabs their attention and makes them want to check out the contents”.
When you send out spam, you can flip that number and you'll see less than 20% actually make it in, if that. So we recommend getting permission. Create a Signup Form and put it on your site. Sign up customers for your emails when they make a purchase. Whatever you do, make sure you have permission so that your email marketing campaigns aren't sent in vain.
If you run a brick-and-mortar business, you're likely sending emails about events and sales to get people to walk into your store. Even with a digital business, live webinars and time-limited discounts can help boost traffic. Constant Contact is an email app that's also great at managing all of those other things you do, so you can create events and promotions, send them out to your existing contacts, and gather new contacts—all from one app.
Take the email below from Paperless Post, for example. I love the header of this email: It provides a clear CTA that includes a sense of urgency. Then, the subheader asks a question that forces recipients to think to themselves, "Wait, when is Mother's Day again? Did I buy Mom a card?" Below this copy, the simple grid design is both easy to scan and quite visually appealing. Each card picture is a CTA in and of itself -- click on any one of them, and you'll be taken to a purchase page.
Email marketing services let you track statistics and monitor the results of your campaigns through advanced email analytics like opens, clicks, bounces, mobile view statistics, email comparisons, and more. Based on the collected information you can make small changes (e.g. design, copy, structure, or workflow) and optimize your email marketing program.
A lot of components come together when sending out an email newsletter: a software or web application that creates the newsletter, and an email server that sends it out. Generally speaking, you’re free to manage each of these components separately. You can install the newsletter software on your server or client computer, and then use the email server provided by your web hosting provider (e.g. Namecheap or GoDaddy).
Tell subscribers what to expect. Whether you plan to send company updates, letters from the president, e-commerce sales, daily deals, or weekly tips, it's important to tell your readers what to expect and how often to expect it. Give them as much information as possible on your signup form, so they can decide whether they want to be on the list or not.
AWeber is an internet email marketing software that is very popular among digital marketers who are engaged in serious marketing. This software has evolved to become a very useful tool that helps both the newbies and the pros alike in email marketing. It comes with convenient features that assist everyone who want to earn money from email marketing and AWeber is often the email marketing platform of choice.

Haven’t used email marketing as much as I should. Previously, we tried using ImnicaMail because of their pricing but it was as good as not having an email marketing campaign; all our mail was sent to spam (since they did not manage their customers’ list for spam). Thought email marketing wasn’t effective until I found out our emails were being sent to the spam box. Learnt my lesson there.
It's designed for transactional and other drip emails, but Sendwithus could also be a great way to send out email updates from your blog and more. You'll be able to trigger emails to go out automatically whenever you publish—or make them work however you want. It's an easy way to send emails via an email sending service and integrate emails deeply into your app, while still having the convenience of beautiful email interface.
As your email-marketing service provider, we'll get your emails into customers' inboxes with lightening speed and laser-beam focus. We treat your contact list as the MVP of data, for its ability to provide meaningful, actionable insights into your potential and current customers. From that data, we segment, target, deploy, test and refine your email campaigns. All the while, we identify key performance indicators and trends that help us repeatedly stay in front of your customers.

9: Integrations – If you want to save yourself hours of mundane repetitive tasks, it’s important that you can automatically connect your email marketing software to the other tools used in your business – from your accounting software to your CRM (if separate). In this section, we compare which email marketing tools have the best blend of quality and quantity of integrations.

Asking a question is a subject line technique that works well because it gives the customer something to think about. Your question should be something on almost every customer's mind. And by opening your email, they're answering that question through their interest. You can even answer the question in your subject line. Here are a few examples of question-type subject lines:
Your AWeber account can also integrate with the most well-known shopping cart tools, letting you add new customers each time they make a purchase on your website. If you want to take your marketing efforts to the next level, you can visit AWeber Labs to build your own apps and time-saving tools through the AWeber API. With this kind of flexibility at your fingertips, you can really take advantage of customer data in order to better optimize marketing strategies.
Smoking Chili Media’s Alistair Dodds explains that a compelling newsletter is a combination of content, as well as testing. Alistair explains their process as first they, “Draft ideas with the team based on best performing content on our blog from past weeks”.  Then they, “Draft ideas of best-curated content the team has read and which we feel will add the most value to our audience”.

Newsletters are different to other types of marketing emails, such as autoresponders (e.g. welcome emails), transactional or triggered/automated emails. However, they can sometimes overlap. Each has an important part to play in any successful email marketing strategy, so newsletters should be used to complement these emails, rather than being an alternative to them.

A GetResponse Email Marketing Benchmarks report found that the biggest spike in average opens is at 1 AM – but fewer than 1% of all emails are sent then. The highest average click-through rates come through around 9 AM. But again, just 1% of campaigns are sent at that time. It’s likely because we open our emails when we start our day, and again after lunch, and those emails are then top of the inbox.
Over time, look at your data to determine if and how you need to adjust. Look at when conversion rates start to drop to determine when you can end the sequence. Don’t be afraid to send four, five, six or more emails, especially if that’s what your metrics are telling you. I know one company, for example, that sends a seven-part email automation to re-engage abandoned carts.

This article is informative, but it does not offer distinguishing features between the services covered (other than mailchimp is free). You seemed to go to great lengths to say good things about each – although I’m sure each services has positive aspects. I would have benefited much more from a rating of some sort of the various features of each service, or at least the pros & cons of each.

Make it a value-add for your subscribers. Anyone can compile a list of articles; why should your subscribers take the time to peruse yours? Weisberg sums this up with the basic thesis behind The Skimm: “Let’s make it easier to be smarter. That’s really what Skimm does – it makes it easier to be smarter in a way that already fits in with your daily routine.”

Around this time, social media also had an impact on email marketing. Facebook launched publically (to anyone over 13 years of age) in 2006. By late 2007 the site had over 100,000 business pages, allowing companies to attract potential customers. Consumers could now interact with a brand through multiple channels; online, instore, Twitter, Facebook, email.
In 2009 Return Path reported nearly 30% of commercial emails sent to users did not reach the inbox; in the same year Merkle reported a lack of relevance was the biggest reason users decided to opt-out of emails. With recipients able to dictate what email they chose to receive and given the power to block those they didn’t want, email started to evolve as a pull rather than a push strategy.

A very popular email marketing solution, Campaign Monitor provide its users with an easy-to-use drag and drop email builder as well as a drag-and-drop segmenting tool (to create different campaigns with different contacts). Using their email template, users can customise emails to fit their brand. This email marketing tool also offers A/B testing to optimise test subject lines, sender details and email designs.

One of the easiest ways to manipulate data is by throwing it into a spreadsheet. Almost anyone can then easily sort the data and quickly find similar segments. Vision6 lets you do this with your contacts, with a spreadsheet-like interface to filter your contacts. Instead of having to set filters and hope they pick the right people, you can see every field in your contact details, sort by the item you want, then select contacts and turn them into a new segment in seconds.
That said, your confirmation emails don’t have to be boring templates. Use them, as Hipmunk does in the example above, to engage subscribers and get them ready to interact with your brand. Here, Hipmunk shares all the different benefits users have access to; yours could include links to FAQs, helpful articles, “Start here” guides, or other resources that create a more positive experience for your subscribers.

Every week, the folks at InVision send a roundup of their best blog content, their favorite design links from the week, and a new opportunity to win a free t-shirt. (Seriously. They give away a new design every week.) They also sometimes have fun survey questions where they crowdsource for their blog. This week's, for example, asked subscribers what they would do if the internet didn't exist.
Why It’s Important: Gregory Ciotti, writing for HelpScout, states: “Successfully utilizing customer feedback is a must for any business looking to provide users with the products they need. Feedback guides and informs your decision-making and influences your product roadmap. It’s also essential for measuring customer satisfaction among your current customers. Getting a handle on how customers view your product, support, and company is invaluable.”
We strongly suggest that you get permission from all of your subscribers before sending emails, especially with the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation in effect. And most email service providers, like VerticalResponse, require you have permission before sending any email through their service. The only time you don’t have to warn readers about ads? If everyone on your list has agreed to receive your emails.
Then, you can use Vision6 to reach those contacts wherever they are. Right along with your email updates, you can schedule SMS and social media messages to go out at the same time. Without having to schedule a blog post and remember to post online at the same time, you can spread the word about your latest deals and promotions everywhere with Vision6.
If someone doesn’t open your email, it doesn’t necessarily mean they are not interested. They could be out of the office, didn’t see the email, or were too busy to read or reply when it was sent. Most people don’t empty their inboxes, so once it’s missed, it’s unlikely to be seen again. To counter this, resend emails to non-openers a week later with a new subject line.
With Vero, users can track and store customer data and events in real-time. Using this information, you can create segments without having to do any coding and send out automated emails. For example, users who have just abandoned the shopping cart can be targeted with an email just hours or days later. In terms of deployment, Vero can be integrated with an email delivery provider, such as Sendgrid.
Yes, of course. There are different options. You can hire an email marketing agency, for example. Two of our team members have worked for such agencies in the past. It's the most professional way to do email marketing but it comes at a high cost. Depending on how much you want to outsource (copywriting, campaign and artwork creation, project management etc.), it will cost several hundred Dollars per newsletter campaign, if not more.
If you like to customize everything about your emails, down to how they're sent, Sendwithus is the email app for you. It's designed to let you send emails from your own app, using the transactional email sending service of your choice. Instead of building email features into your own app or site, Sendwithus gives your team one place to manage your email templates, organize and sort your contacts, then trigger new emails via a CURL or API call. You can use Amazon SES, Postmark, SendGrid, Mandrill and more to send your messages, then track their stats and more in your Sendwithus dashboard.

If you’re new to this, you’re definitely going to face some personal resistance. After all, even if you have no hang-ups pestering people in their inbox, you’re still going to be putting your ideas and thoughts out into the world and that can be scary. We all hope that our content will be coherent, useful, not invasive or annoying and please god never offensive to anyone! For anyone who is not seasoned in the arena of public opinion, critique and criticism, putting yourself  “out there” in those first few articles or emails will be nerve-racking.

The percentage of email opens on mobile devices continues to grow. According to the GetResponse Email Marketing Benchmarks report, webmail opens make up 56.52% of all email opens, followed by mobile opens at 26%, and desktop opens at 16.99%. The responsive email design tool means you can make sure that your email looks great on any screen, automatically.
A. Whether a seller or forwarder is a “sender” or “initiator” depends on the facts. So deciding if the CAN-SPAM Act applies to a commercial “forward-to-a-friend” message often depends on whether the seller has offered to pay the forwarder or give the forwarder some other benefit. For example, if the seller offers money, coupons, discounts, awards, additional entries in a sweepstakes, or the like in exchange for forwarding a message, the seller may be responsible for compliance. Or if a seller pays or give a benefit to someone in exchange for generating traffic to a website or for any form of referral, the seller is likely to have compliance obligations under the CAN-SPAM Act.
Victor Bilandzic from Motava, explains that keeping emails short and sweet is key. He says, “Long-form emails are not read. For the various newsletters we manage, we have two approaches: 1. If the design is graphic-heavy: Only use a few lines of copy and a bold link to one external link or action we want the reader to take. 2. If the design is simple or text-only: Only a few paragraphs of copy with a plain text link at the bottom”.
I wondered, what are your thoughts on solutions like Mailigen, Vertical Response, Mad Mimi, and Campaign Monitor? I know there’s a never ending list of possible email software companies that you could compare, but these ones in particular interested me as they seem to offer many similar services to those that you mentioned. Have you come across them before, and if so would you advise using them over GetResponse?

And that leads us right into understanding service pricing and packaging. The email marketing services we reviewed range from about $5 per month to as much as $20 per month for a range of features. Many email marketing plans include unlimited email sends each month and bill you based on the number of subscribers. If you have a small list, then look for a company that offers a free plan, a low-cost plan for several hundred subscribers, or even a pay-as-you-go plan. On the flip side, many of these services also offer high-volume plans with up to 100,000 or more contacts. Sometimes this requires a custom plan that has to be arranged directly with a sales rep. If you're willing to commit, then look for the companies that offer discounts if you pay yearly rather than monthly. A few offer also money-back guarantees.

Carl: Exactly, and of the things I love to do in a drip for example is to try and choose your response from the subscriber. So ask them why they’re interested in, or what is their favorite article of clothing, or what are you going to do this week, whatever the case might be. And a company like Uniqlo, if they would set up a drip or maybe somebody with a volume such as MailChimp, doesn’t have the resources to handle that kind of responses or maybe don’t want to.
Draft a business plan for your email marketing company. A business plan helps you stay on track during each phase of business development. Your business plan should contain at least four sections and include a description your business and the types of clients you want to attract, startup and monthly costs, licenses needed to run your business and a marketing strategy to help promote your services.
To ensure your email doesn’t get flagged as SPAM or junk by readers, consider implementing a permission-based approach. Permission marketing is essentially when a recipients have provided explicit consent that they want to receive your email communications – whether by sign-up or other opt-in mechanism. There are a number of things you can do to build an organic, opt-in marketing list. Read about these in my earlier blogs:

Address subscribers by name. Personalized emails are more successful. Buffer also suggests to personalize your emails based on need by sending emails that meet different user expectations. This makes them more targeted and more likely to be successful. Some studies show that educating and segmenting your audience will boost your click through rate on emails by up to 50%.
