A list is an easy way to offer something of value, sell a product or service, and not seem too obvious about it. A list gives a customer a subconscious message that your email is organized in a way that makes it an easy read. They'll be more compelled to open your email if they know ahead of time that they'll not be facing a wall of text. Victor Bilandzic from Motava, explains that keeping emails short and sweet is key. He says, “Long-form emails are not read. For the various newsletters we manage, we have two approaches: 1. If the design is graphic-heavy: Only use a few lines of copy and a bold link to one external link or action we want the reader to take. 2. Maybe there is someone out there that still likes getting monthly or weekly emails in their inbox with subject lines like “August newsletter: update of company events at blah blah Inc.” However, for most of us the word “newsletter” has become unattractive; devoid of meaning and therefore any value. We don't like the newsletters we receive nor do we get anything out of them so we resist creating our own email marketing campaigns in fear of being that meaningless content dribbling into others inboxes that we dislike so much ourselves.

The CAN-SPAM (Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography and Marketing) Act became a must-read for all email marketers when it was enacted in 2003. More than just a regulation to prevent and discourage junk mail, the CAN-SPAM Act regulates all commercial email messages. A. Whether a seller or forwarder is a “sender” or “initiator” depends on the facts. So deciding if the CAN-SPAM Act applies to a commercial “forward-to-a-friend” message often depends on whether the seller has offered to pay the forwarder or give the forwarder some other benefit. Carl: They’re most likely to open a new emails when they just sign up, versus a month from now, versus a year from now. You’ll see this tail basically, your email rate tailing off in terms of open rates and click rates, and that is expected. So as a marketer, if you see that, don’t freak out. It doesn’t mean that your second or third email are really bad. It’s just a normal user behavior that you’ll see throughout your campaigns.


We strongly suggest that you get permission from all of your subscribers before sending emails, especially with the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation in effect. And most email service providers, like VerticalResponse, require you have permission before sending any email through their service. The only time you don’t have to warn readers about ads? If everyone on your list has agreed to receive your emails.
Janet: I think that is a good strategy for people, especially businesses who don’t have regularly restocked inventory, or new things to show every week. They can really go in-depth and tell a story either about a customer, or a feature, or like a product. That can be way more compelling than just giving you, “Ten percent discount”, “Limited time only”. I think that’s a good way to do newsletters without being overly promotional every single time.

Purchased lists are ineffective, and they impact everyone else who uses Mailchimp, too. If you send emails to a list of people whose contact info you bought, many of the emails will get identified as spam. Some spam filters will flag a campaign if anyone with the same IP has sent spam in the past. However, if your email server doesn’t have a good sender reputation, your emails won’t be accepted by major email services such as Gmail, Yahoo, AOL etc.
Be thoughtful about what you’re putting out. If you run an IT firm and you think your audience might enjoy funny cartoons every week, make sure the cartoons are both on brand for your company, and that the content relates to your industry and its challenges that you solve. Images and illustrations that are completely unrelated to what you do probably aren’t going to help you very much; they’ll just be a cheap trick.
Carl: Right, and so they’re giving you this information one step at a time to make sure you as a customer have time to process it and digest it. That’s much more user-friendly than just sending you like, “Here’s our startup guide”, in this like 30-page PDF. Right? So that’s the goal behind this email series that they have. Sometimes you’ll have companies who’s goal is to sell.
