Janet: I think that is a good strategy for people, especially businesses who don’t have regularly restocked inventory, or new things to show every week. They can really go in-depth and tell a story either about a customer, or a feature, or like a product. That can be way more compelling than just giving you, “Ten percent discount”, “Limited time only”. I think that’s a good way to do newsletters without being overly promotional every single time.
Relying on people to organically land on your site can be frustrating. It’s kind of like looking for a gas station to fill a nearly empty tank with Google Maps or Waze on the fritz. In a 2014 interview with Campaign Monitor, a Gmail representative with the Gmail Anti-Abuse Team said that they want to “see evidence that your recipients love, or at the very least, want your messages.” In other words, if you have many inactive subscribers—they don’t open or click your emails—your emails will more likely hit the promotions tab, or worse, the spam folder.
Haven’t used email marketing as much as I should. Previously, we tried using ImnicaMail because of their pricing but it was as good as not having an email marketing campaign; all our mail was sent to spam (since they did not manage their customers’ list for spam). Thought email marketing wasn’t effective until I found out our emails were being sent to the spam box. Learnt my lesson there.
What they should improve: It's probably more of a feature than a bug but definitely one of the things I don't find ideal – you're completely dependent on Amazon SES. Because of that, the setup process takes a lot longer than for other newsletter tools. You have to register for two different services and Amazon requests a lot of information from you.

I recently had my MailChimp account suspended. One of my sites is in the ‘make money online’ space. It’s a completely legitimate website, but apparently if your emails contain keywords they don’t like, they will suspend you. I would not recommend using them. Contacting support I just get form responses that are completely unhelpful. There’s no phone support- just account termination. Really bad experience. Luckily, this is a very new site- but imagine if you have thousands of emails and they just shut you down without ANY recourse.
