The CAN-SPAM (Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography and Marketing) Act became a must-read for all email marketers when it was enacted in 2003. More than just a regulation to prevent and discourage junk mail, the CAN-SPAM Act regulates all commercial email messages. In the eyes of the law, “commercial messages” include “any electronic mail message the primary purpose of which is the commercial advertisement or promotion of a commercial product or service,” including email promoting content on commercial websites. 

Check out this simple example from YouCanBook.Me, an online scheduling and booking tool. The email educates users about the product itself, specifically, its new features. Those who actively use it benefit from the information, while those who don’t use the tool see how the team is continually making improvements to and developing the product, which may pique their interest.
It’s easy to think of email as little more than a means of communication, but for businesses, email marketing is one of the most effective ways to grow an audience. According to a report by consulting firm McKinsey, email is 40 times better at acquiring new customers than Facebook and Twitter combined. And marketing research group eMarketer finds that email campaigns have a return on investment that’s more than four times the ROI of search, display, or social media.
We just started using MailChimp because it seems to be the only one that offers a free account for small or new users. The problem is that there are so many steps for a potential subscriber to go through with both double opt-in and recaptcha, that we are getting at best complaints to worst, plain nasty comments posted on our Facebook page. We don’t know how many would be subscribers we lost because of this.
But that’s not all. You also want to do this to show Google and other email providers that people actually want your emails. In a 2014 interview with Campaign Monitor, a Gmail representative with the Gmail Anti-Abuse Team said that they want to “see evidence that your recipients love, or at the very least, want your messages.” In other words, if you have many inactive subscribers—they don’t open or click your emails—your emails will more likely hit the promotions tab, or worse, the spam folder.

I currently use GetResponse (as I’d not been as active and appreciate the price-value relationship for 1,000+ contacts. Where they should improve: Although they promote themselves as ‘the world’s largest marketing automation platform’, their automation could be massively improved with a workflow editor and more automations beyond just autoresponders. Emails also have a tendency to end up in Gmail’s Promotions tab – fine if your emails are promoting sales and offers, but less than ideal if they’re informational or transactional. The interface could also be a bit more user-friendly.
This article is informative, but it does not offer distinguishing features between the services covered (other than mailchimp is free). You seemed to go to great lengths to say good things about each – although I’m sure each services has positive aspects. I would have benefited much more from a rating of some sort of the various features of each service, or at least the pros & cons of each.

What It Is: Given the statistic above, referral marketing deserves a place in every business’s email marketing arsenal. When thinking about the five types of email marketing described previously, direct sales emails are best for customer acquisition, revenue generation and customer win-back. Direct sales emails may also have a role in your customer retention plan but should not be used as the exclusive means for retaining customers via email communications. Direct sales emails should not be used at all for customer loyalty and brand building email efforts.
Carl: Right, and so they’re giving you this information one step at a time to make sure you as a customer have time to process it and digest it. That’s much more user-friendly than just sending you like, “Here’s our startup guide”, in this like 30-page PDF. Right? So that’s the goal behind this email series that they have. Sometimes you’ll have companies who’s goal is to sell.
