Out of all the channels I tested as a marketer, email continually outperforms most of them. Not only does it have a high conversion rate, but as you build up your list, you can continually monetize it by pitching multiple products. Just look at ecommerce sites like Amazon: One way they get you to continually buy more products from them is by emailing you offers on a regular basis.
For Campaign Monitor customers, you can either manually upload an existing list (from an Excel file for instance) or you can connect your Campaign Monitor account to the tool where your customer data lives (such as your CRM, accounting, eCommerce tool, and hundreds of others) and automatically sync your customer information into your Campaign Monitor account.
What we liked: The tool just looks cool, with a black background and icons that pop with colour (imagine Spotify, but for email marketing). It’s also easy to use, and has a zippy and intuitive email editor. We really like the effort they’ve put into their email templates, too, which are some of the nicest looking we’ve seen. Plus, they’ve baked plenty of flexibility into their email editor, allowing you to tweak templates pretty much as you please.
However, when it comes to sending your messages, the last thing you want to do is to use your Gmail or Hotmail account. Instead, sign up for an established email marketing provider like Aweber or MailChimp (which offers free, limited usage plans to small business owners). Not only do these services offer great features like message templates and account analytics, the arrangements they have with popular email services ensure that your messages are delivered – not hung up in your recipients’ spam folders.
This is a topic I plan to write more on in the future, but I’ll briefly summarize it here. When a little old website called Mint.com launched back around 2008, a quick glance at their footer links and you would notice something interesting. Each link had “rich anchor text” (meaning the words used for the link were purposefully chosen) and the pages they linked to were landing pages. Taking note of this strategy, when I launched my previous business, BlueSkyLocal.com, in 2009 I made sure we followed the same strategy (see below). We’ll warn you right now that as you’re evaluating different email platforms, you’ll likely be tempted to focus a lot of your attention on which platform has the prettiest email templates. This is understandable. But unless you have an e-commerce company and are selling a physical product online, the truth is that the visual aesthetics of your emails are not the most important factor.
