Getting started shouldn't be daunting. Luckily, most of these services have modern-looking graphics and uncluttered layouts. These are not the complex business software UIs of yesterday. Be careful, though, as some free trials require a credit card. This means you need to be sure to cancel your trial before you're billed if you're not happy with the service.

Cold Email Case Study Years ago, I used cold email campaigns to generate leads via… surveys. Yes, I was obnoxious (and scrappy enough) to email strangers — but I did it out of love! (or ignorance haha) I knew a lot less about how to be an effective marketer back then, but I was willing to try just about anything without assuming “oh that just wouldn’t work.” So, when I was working on building a previous company, I sent an email to several thousand restaurant owners with a link to fill out a 5 question Google survey. That campaign received a response rate just over 1%. I sent the campaign just to collect some research data for a whitepaper I was writing at the time on how weather and other factors affect restaurant sales. About 2 years later, I ran a similar experiment, emailing business owner (with no personalization or any strategic thought in how to target it) and received relatively the same response rate. Keep in mind, in both of these situations, I was taking value rather than giving it (but still getting results!). If you try this strategy and offer something for free THAT IS VALUABLE and to a TARGETED group of people (as you should, otherwise you’re just spamming), you can expect to see a much higher response rate. However, I urge you not to abuse this. Otherwise you’ll poison the well for other companies and hurt your own brand.
Optimizely and Visual Website Optimizer. I’m grouping these two together because they are very similar. Both tools are specifically built ONLY for split testing different design changes on your site. I’ve used both (briefly) in the past without any complaints. VWO seemed easier to get started with in my opinion, and both integrate with WordPress and other services.
Imagine how your audience members’ response might be different if their added to your list but don’t hear from you for several months until your schedule opens up enough to revisit email marketing.  By this point, your readers will have grown cold to your company’s promotions (assuming they remember who you are or that they requested information from you at all in the first place).  As a result, you’ll see a significantly lower success rate from your promotional efforts than if you’d taken the time to build genuine relationships with the members of your email marketing lists.

Does it work best towards the bottom of a blog page, when it slides out to the right, or does it get higher conversions at the beginning of the page, sliding out from the left?

In situations where you can’t find an included tutorial to meet your needs, you can often find instruction from a variety of web resources. Whether you prefer written instructions or want to see each step in a video, you can find free information online to help you move forward with your design. So, before you think completing part of the setup of the site is too difficult, hope into your favorite search engine and see what if the larger community doesn’t have an answer.
Just like with website copy, you can create a number of variants for your popup, contact form or contest banner, and then test each individual part, like the color of the call-to-action button, text or image, and then see which combination is producing the best results. This way, you can create the most effective forms that will convert many visitors into leads. You can easily set up Optimizely on your website by adding a piece of code to it.

In both of these examples, it’s important to note that the lead form is simple and only asks for the necessary contact information, such as email and first name. The more contact information you ask for, the less likely your leads will be to fill out the form. You will need to work to build trust before you can gather the rest of their contact information. However, for the purposes of building your email list, you only need their email address. Work on getting any other information you need later after you’ve established a relationship with the customer.
The Offer Finally, if/when you send out those “money” emails (especially for re-marketing purposes, which we will discuss later on), you need to test out offers. An extra 15-days to try the product, or a $10 discount for being on the newsletter? Should you offer an incentive to those who have signed up but haven’t gotten started with your product, or just send a reminder? Find out the answers with split-testing!
Email can accommodate almost any message a marketer wants to send. For instance, UrbanDaddy.com, a nightlife website, ran a highly successful email marketing campaign by including large, eye catching images in the header of the email. The images were geared toward a young male demographic and gave the email context. They encouraged the reader to scroll down and engage with the sales messages contained in the body of the email. If you’re frequently practicing the content upgrade strategy as part of your blogging efforts, you’ll quickly amass a base of “premium” upgrades. This strategy is but one more incentive to encourage visitors to optin on your website using their email. There are basic tools and plugins that allow you to setup this membership functionality on your WordPress site, but most of the best ones have a paid option.
Some web browsers offer privacy modes where users can hide information about themselves from publishers and advertisers. Among other consequences, advertisers can't use cookies to serve targeted ads to private browsers. Most major browsers have incorporated Do Not Track options into their browser headers, but the regulations currently are only enforced by the honor system.[89][90][91]
Customer reviews are the "social proof" that encourages people to join in on something. It's one thing for you to tell people to sign up for a campaign, but it's another thing for your happiest customers to say it too. Publish your best reviews from communities like Yelp right to your website. This adds genuine value to your landing pages when people are on the fence about submitting their contact information. 
Make sales on autopilot. Creating a sales funnel out of an email autoresponder sequence is a widely adopted strategy used by information marketers, but it can also be used by software companies, eCommerce businesses, and service providers. For example, it could consist of a series of educational videos, a sales video, and follow-ups to sell your information products. Or, you could create a sequence of free educational emails, and then invite leads to a live or recorded webinar where you make an offer. For eCommerce businesses, your sales sequence could include promo offers for products your subscriber has just viewed on your website.

As you’re drafting your messages, pay as much attention to the spam score reported by your account provider as you do the content of your emails.  Nearly all commercial email list providers offer this service, which grades your messages based on the presence of excessive links, sales oriented phrases (like “Buy now!” or “Free”) and other elements that are commonly used by email marketing spammers.
