Quick note on this before I give examples… While on a recent trip overseas it was explained to me by a fellow entrepreneur local to the area that no one “trusted” it when companies put the logos etc. of third parties on their website. Hopefully it doesn’t get to this point in the USA so I caution you to always use REAL social proof (don’t fake it, or I will find you and… signup for your newsletter with a fake email address just to spite you). When people talk about email marketing, lots of them forget to mention transactional emails. These are the automated emails you get in your inbox after taking a certain action on a website. This could be anything from filling out a form, to purchasing a product, to updating you on the progress of your order. Often, these are plain text emails that marketers set and forget.

Social media results are often better for brands when they use paid ads in combination with organic posts. The main reason for this is that social media channels like Facebook have access to a wealth of third-party data. This data allows you to reach a uniquely targeted group of consumers who are most likely to be interested in your holiday promotions.
There are ways to make money online without a website but I definitely recommend the tried-and-true model where you make your own website. But since you can’t just judge a message’s quality by your own perceptions (as the members of your list will have diverse interests and viewpoints), you can also take a look at the analytics information provided by your email marketing account provider to see which messages have been opened and which emails have been accessed most frequently.  This should give you some insight into the message topics your audience finds most compelling.

In Mistake #4 above, I referenced the importance of using this information to identifying your top performing message topics, but there are plenty of other things you can do with this information.  For example, you can use your open rate data to identify readers who have opened all your messages, but failed to make a purchase with your business.  Using the tools provided by your email marketing program, you could then group these readers into a sub-segment of your list in order to send them targeted promotions based on their past interaction history.

When you use a software or vendor to send out the emails spend some time and customize the messages that go out with each email. Try to make the registration process easy and inform the users what is happening at each stage. Free courses convert better than just about anything. How do I know?
