If you want to take advantage of the opportunities that small business email marketing can provide, you’ll need to focus on the strategies and tactics that are proven to drive sales. Below, we’ll dive into a few different aspects of small business email marketing and provide helpful tips along the way for strategy, implementation, and optimization.
After an email campaign is sent out, it will be important to track and evaluate the success of that campaign. Pre-established metrics should be used to determine success or failure. If a campaign is not performing well, marketers can change the design of the ads, the products being emphasized, or the deals being offered. The flexibility of email makes it easy to implement changes quickly and inexpensively.
I wondered, what are your thoughts on solutions like Mailigen, Vertical Response, Mad Mimi, and Campaign Monitor? I know there’s a never ending list of possible email software companies that you could compare, but these ones in particular interested me as they seem to offer many similar services to those that you mentioned. Have you come across them before, and if so would you advise using them over GetResponse?
This consistent outreach translates into people more easily thinking of your business when they need your services. The key word here being, “consistent,” not, “irregular.” If you email your network once or twice a year and it’s only ever to promote your business, you’ll likely see very low engagement. There’s not much in it for them, only for you.
The above template is partially based on the “Break Through Email” system that’s been used to generate millions of dollars in sales for it’s founder, as well as his students of the course. The format is a bit different but it’s a good starting point to help you get results. To setup the landing page, you can use one of the recommended tools above like Lead Pages, or Unbounce, or Instapage. There’s also plenty of free HTML templates online you can download. Cold Email Case Study Years ago, I used cold email campaigns to generate leads via… surveys. Yes, I was obnoxious (and scrappy enough) to email strangers — but I did it out of love! (or ignorance haha) I knew a lot less about how to be an effective marketer back then, but I was willing to try just about anything without assuming “oh that just wouldn’t work.” So, when I was working on building a previous company, I sent an email to several thousand restaurant owners with a link to fill out a 5 question Google survey. That campaign received a response rate just over 1%. I sent the campaign just to collect some research data for a whitepaper I was writing at the time on how weather and other factors affect restaurant sales. About 2 years later, I ran a similar experiment, emailing business owner (with no personalization or any strategic thought in how to target it) and received relatively the same response rate. Keep in mind, in both of these situations, I was taking value rather than giving it (but still getting results!). If you try this strategy and offer something for free THAT IS VALUABLE and to a TARGETED group of people (as you should, otherwise you’re just spamming), you can expect to see a much higher response rate. However, I urge you not to abuse this. Otherwise you’ll poison the well for other companies and hurt your own brand.
According to a study (PDF) published in the Journal of Consumer Research, people shy away from single option offers. However, when presented with multiple options, we are more likely to make a purchase decision on the spot (about 3x more likely in fact according the research). For this reason you want to consider giving people multiple options to optin for your offers. For example, here’s how I do it on our free course widget: Here’s another (perhaps even more effective) example from Michael Hyatt’s website. What I like about how Michael does it here is the fact that he truly give your two choices, not just two calls to action. One choice will sign-up immediately. The other will take you to a landing page where you can learn a little more and then optin there. Very smart, copy this on your own website.

But just one category continues to perform well year after year: email marketing. The reason is clear: For ten years in a row, email generates the highest ROI for marketers. For every $1 spent, email marketing generates $38 in ROI and gives marketers the broadest reach of all the channels available to them. Despite the plethora of tools available to marketers, email marketing is simply the best bet for business growth.


All bases require some core elements but, other than that, you can make them as ridiculous as you like. You can also get even more creative with the best Ark: Survival Evolved mods. So it is helpful if you opt for a location close to the materials you need. In ascending order of durability these materials are thatch, wood, stone, and metal. Offering a free tools report is a quite common opt-in bribe. I’ve experimented with it a bit and had success to a limited degree, but there are 2 prominent cases where offering a tools report worked extremely well. Lead Pages Clay Collins and the guys over at Lead Pages recently published a blog post where they showed the highest optin landing page they tested to grow their own email list, and it was a a free tools report. Creating an “optin bride” like this can take as little as 30 minutes, it doesn’t have to be complicated, it just has to be something people WANT. And the reason why it works so well is because people understand the offer (“tools” is a much clearer word than “resources”) plus, it’s a low commitment offer (perhaps why in some contexts, this kind of offer would beat a free course offer).
One of the greatest advantages of email marketing is that it allows marketers to send targeted messages. Print, radio and television ads are broadcast indiscriminately and frequently reach consumers who have no interest in the product offered. But email marketing allows companies to tailor certain ads to certain customers. If a customer has shopped for a brand of shoes in the past, companies can email them coupons for that same brand knowing that they have already expressed an interest.

Instead, I’m talking about timed pop-up ads, or onsite retargeting. After a user spends a certain amount of time on your page, she can receive a pop-up relevant to the content on that page, or to her behavior. 1) I would set up a MailChimp account, for free. It’s the industry leader, it’s the best performer (in my experience) and it’s the most pleasant to use from a UX/UI standpoint (which matters a lot to me). It’s also entirely free from the get-go, up until a couple thousand subscribers. It’s a “no-duh” piece of software. This let you easily segment your lists depending on sign-up locations, or sign up types. If you have email resources to push subscribers – like Bidsketch does with their proposal templates – you can easily segment the users that sign up there, apart from the users that sign up straight from your blog.

How do I know they work? Either I have personally tried them and I know first hand OR I can cite a well known authority or case study example where the list building strategy has been used successfully. So suit up and strap on your rain boots, because we’re about to make it pour email subscribers…
This is a mistake.  Sending regular messages to your email marketing list conditions your audience to expect to hear from you at certain intervals.  At best, your recipients may come to look forward to your scheduled missives, but even at its worst, sending regular messages gets your audience members used to seeing your company’s name inside their inboxes.
This is one of those low-hanging fruit strategies that is so easy you can implement it across your website and sales funnel in a matter of minutes. Simply put: if your goal is to collect email subscribers… then why are you requiring fields other than an email address on your form? Avoid creating an optin form that looks like this: Not only should you not require all those fields, but take them out! Take them ALL out, and just require an email address. Early on, I was able to double our email conversion rate by just changing our form from 2 fields (first name and email) to just 1 form field (email address). Similarly, Marketo (which is now a public company) experimented with removing multiple form fields. The result? Cost per lead dropped by $10 and conversion rates increased 34%.
Double opt-in is generally believed to cut spam complaint rates, though you may see a slight decrease in your opt-in rates compared to a single opt-in set-up.  Both arrangements have their place in the email marketing world – the important thing is that you’re requesting future recipients’ permission to receive messages from your business.  Sending messages without securing this permission is a quick way to get your account banned due to CAN-SPAM complaints.

What we liked: MailChimp places a strong focus on design, which is evident in its easy-to-use editor and modern-looking email templates. If you’re an ecommerce, MailChimp offers some of the best automation options out there, including abandoned cart and purchase confirmation emails. Reporting is superb, too, with data around social media and conversions. There are also hundreds of integrations available, making it one of the most versatile email marketing tools.
What about Webydo? I’ve seen other blogs that recommend them as cloud based website software, but it doesn’t even seem to make your list. Could you at least write a review to help us understand why it isn’t included in this list. I’ve heard very good things about it. It is a bit expensive, but I’m sure that you can justify/disprove that price very easily.
Another way to improve your email delivery rates is to include an unsubscribe option in each of your marketing emails. This would be a link or button at the bottom of the email that allows subscribers to unsubscribe from your list if they no longer want to receive your content. This helps ensure that everyone on your email list is giving their permission to receive marketing emails from you. This also helps you weed out those subscribers that are no longer getting value from your content.
Address subscribers by name. Personalized emails are more successful. Buffer also suggests to personalize your emails based on need by sending emails that meet different user expectations. This makes them more targeted and more likely to be successful. Some studies show that educating and segmenting your audience will boost your click through rate on emails by up to 50%.
I’m sure you’ve heard it before many many times but it’s true. If you have something to sell your list will bring you more income than any other single method. Not only is your list the most important asset you have but it can come with you. What I mean by that is if you have a website on your chosen topic that dies for whatever reason your list will be unaffected by it. You can simply start a new site and move all your peeps over to the new site with one email notification. It sure beats starting all over again.

It’s also easy to use, and has a zippy and intuitive email editor. We really like the effort they’ve put into their email templates, too, which are some of the nicest looking we’ve seen. Plus, they’ve baked plenty of flexibility into their email editor, allowing you to tweak templates pretty much as you please.

Mixergy.com helped to popularize this strategy. The idea is that in order to gain entry to a website’s content, you have to enter your email address on the homepage. One you do so, a cookie is set on your browser so the next time you come back to the site you don’t have to fill in your email again to get access. There have been a number of off-shoots of this strategy. For example, Noah Kagen used a similar strategy to help grow Appsumo’s email list to over 700,000 subscribers in record time by having this simple newsletter call-to-action sitting above the page content… But wait, there’s more to AppSumo’s “improved gateway” email capture strategy. It’s so simple, most people would miss it if they weren’t looking closely… Here it is: Any content page you visit (outside of their Browse page) will show you this header design by default… And you’ll continuously be shown this call-to-action… until you optin. So even if I’m searching for something on Google and I come across a subpage one one of AppSumo’s older offers, I’m going to see this optin header. I like how this is implemented because it’s less “annoying” that the other types of gateway email optins because I can easily bypass it… but at the same time I’ll keep being exposed to it until I sign-up. I guarantee you, this was one big factor in why AppSumo was able to grow their email list so quickly. But I’ll ask Noah just to confirm and update this section later on…
As far as I’m concerned, it’s a myth that you need to double opt-in all contacts. For example, if that requirement were turned on, I’m confident we would lose about 10% of our email subscribers. Not because they weren’t real people, but just because everyone is busy and emails can easily get buried. Part of the way I get around this is in using Wufoo forms and LeadPages, email addresses are directly imported into into our email marketing software via an API. This bypasses the normal double opt-in requirement. So even if we end up having some “fake” or mis-spelled contacts in our database, I’d rather have those AND a 10% larger list. Plus, if an email address bounces, it’s automatically cleaned from our database.

2. People don’t realize, but you don’t need any fancy plugins like OptinMonster, OptinSkin, or OptinWhatever to add subscription forms to your blog. Most people are using those to gain affiliate revenue. You can use a plain HTML form, spruce it up with some CSS and drop it into Single.php in your WordPress theme to have it appear after your post. It seems to work just as well as OptinWhatever. Go ahead and play with this, A/B testing it with in Optimizely or Google Content Experiments. You can also use Crazy Egg or SumoMe Heat Maps to more easily optimize the placement of these forms.

Get creative. Since every business is different, some of the strategies in this guide might not work for your business if you implement them exactly as described. However, most of what’s described can work for a large majority of businesses with just a few tweaks. In some cases, you might even get greater results than the people who wrote these posts.

As a publilcy traded company and market leaders, they aggressively advertise their product, neglecting the fact the the main product is free of charge. If the name Weebly rings a bell, it could be the fact that Tim Ferris, publisher of several best selling books and a top tier consultant recommends it with passion, stating it is one of the top website builders available, helping him build a fully functional web site in less than 2 hours. The rest are widely known as well, may it be for Ecommerce uses, or being a leading internet services company like Web, which is publicly traded at the NASDAQ stock exchange.

As mentioned before, the type of email campaign you send depends entirely on your goals with email. If you’re looking to drive direct sales then sending marketing offer and announcement campaigns are going to return the best results, however if you are simply looking to keep your existing customers up-to-date on the latest projects, products or developments at your company, then sending a regular newsletter is going to be the best way to achieve that.
When I think about the brands I like best, like J. Crew, Spotify, and SoulCycle, I know I’m not a loyal brand advocate because of their products alone. I can get cheaper clothes, music, and groceries from plenty of other places. Ultimately, I’m a brand advocate because I believe in what they promote and I feel invested in their stories, like SoulCycle’s: “We aspire to inspire. We inhale intention and exhale expectation.” I relate to their brand messaging.

Cleaning your CRM and keeping your customer and marketing lists updated is a huge pain. I have an automatic way to keep your lists clean: import them into Inlistio ( https://www.inlistio.com) and it will track their job changes and give you the best new email address (along with every past email address). It saves a ton of time and is very accurate.
There are a couple things we love about this email example from PayPal. Not only is the opening copy clever and concise, but the entire concept also reflects a relatable benefit of using the service. Think about it: How many times have you been in a situation where you went out to dinner with friends and then fussed over the bill when it came time to pay? By tapping into this common pain point, PayPal is able to pique the interest of its audience. 
Flowvella is available on the Mac App Store as a desktop application. It provides a simple interface (certainly cleaner than Microsoft PowerPoint and somewhat similar to Apple Keynote) and some very nice design templates, which set good grounds so you can start building a nice looking set of slides on top of them. This is by far their biggest strength! If you want to start from scratch, however, you might feel a little lost creating something that looks good.

The Content Upgrade is a tactic that’s been around for a while, probably popularized in more recent years due HubSpot (an inbound marketing company) practicing it on every one of their blog posts. The basic definition of a content upgrade is this: on every article you publish on your blog, you create a simple bonus or “extra” that a visitor can get access to by providing their email. The bonus offer is something related to what is discussed in the article. For example, last week I wrote about “Pumpkin Hacking” as it relates to SEO.
