The Law of Scale is what all good marketers recognize, intuitively or explicitly. It states that in order to get to scale, you must leverage that which has scale. In other words, if your business’s email list is on level 1 (small), and you want to get up to level 2 (medium), use the tactic that will get you (or that have already gotten others) up there: the elevator, the stairs, a ladder, etc. Except in this case the stairs and the ladder are other websites. One of the most effective ways to do this is with guest blog posts. Brian Harris (VideoFruit.com) and others have used this technique to attract hundreds of new email subscribers to their lists. The basic formula works like this:
Retargeting is an amazing new type of advertising technology. I’m not sure HOW new it is (depending on when you’re reading this). But in either case, it’s not just cool, it can help you build your email list. Here’s how retargeting works to bring back visitors to your website who didn’t convert: In THIS context though, where we’re looking to build your email list, you want to send him / her to a simple landing page which will help to educate him / her about all the super cool benefits they’ll receive when they optin. For example: If you want to learn more about how retargeting works and how you can easily set it up to help you drive more leads and grow your email list, click the lazy cat below.
SendInBlue is something of an email marketing all-rounder, offering a feature list that would make some other better-known tools blush – and at extremely competitive prices, too. We’re talking about automations, transactional emails, SMS, landing pages, and dynamic segments. And prices that seem almost too good to be true (not to mention a decently-featured free plan). Let’s take a look in more detail.
Both easy to learn for email marketing newcomers and extensive and functional for more technically inclined veterans, iContact is a solid choice of email marketing automation. The back-end functionality is reliable and pretty extensive, their email templates are high quality, and the user experience of the software is very typical to other platforms we reviewed. The ability to schedule social media posts from the same tool is also a nice bonus, particularly if you’re new to social scheduling and would prefer to learn only one new piece of software at a time.
Write great subject lines. David Ogilvy once said that 80 cents of your dollar should be spent on writing headlines. With emails, the subject line is just as important. If it doesn’t catch your attention, you won’t open it. So, spend the majority of your time writing and polishing your subject line. A great email subject line entices curiosity about the content of the email. It’s also personal, and highly relevant to the recipient. To learn more about how to write amazing subject lines, we have an entire blog post on the topic: 30 Successful Bloggers Share Their Best Converting Email Subject Line.
"Why aren't millennials moving?" The subject line of this email campaign reads before citing interesting data about relocation trends in the U.S. Trulia doesn't benefit from people who choose not to move, but the company does benefit from having its fingers on the pulse of the industry -- and showing it cares which way the real estate winds are blowing.
Historically, it has been difficult to measure the effectiveness of marketing campaigns because target markets cannot be adequately defined. Email marketing carries the benefit of allowing marketers to identify returns on investment and measure and improve efficiency. Email marketing allows marketers to see feedback from users in real time, and to monitor how effective their campaign is in achieving market penetration, revealing a communication channel's scope. At the same time, however, it also means that the more personal nature of certain advertising methods, such as television advertisements, cannot be captured.
Overall, MailChimp remains a solid choice of email marketing platform for small business owners with a small and slow-growing list, or who are just getting started with email marketing and want to test the benefits before opting for a paid solution. But if you’re serious about growing your email list and aim to push quickly past that 2,000 subscriber mark, you’re better off starting from the outset on a paid platform with more comprehensive capabilities.
Transactional Emails – These are emails that are sent out after certain actions trigger them. When a customer buys a product or makes a reservation, emails are sent out confirming that transaction. They legitimize online commerce by giving customers a way to prove they have bought something. Transactional emails often also contain new sales messages. Studies have shown that transactional emails are opened 51.3% of the time, while newsletters are only opened 36.6% of the time. Knowing that they have a captive audience, marketers will often try to insert new sales pitches into emails that are not explicitly for selling. For example, airline reservation emails often ask if you would like to upgrade your seat for a fee.
Getting started shouldn't be daunting. Generally, you'll know right away whether you like a user interface (UI) or not, and most of the contenders we reviewed offer free trials so you can poke around before dropping any cash. Luckily, most of these services have modern-looking graphics and uncluttered layouts. These are not the complex business software UIs of yesterday. Be careful, though, as some free trials require a credit card. This means you need to be sure to cancel your trial before you're billed if you're not happy with the service.
Klaviyo – Klaviyo allows e-commerce marketers to target, personalize, measure, and optimize email and Facebook campaigns. When getting started, businesses can define their font and brand colors, and Klaviyo will automatically apply them to built-in workflows and any new templates. You can also create new templates based on different prebuilt layouts. Other features include one-click integrations, ROI-based reporting, segmentation, autoresponders, personalization and responsive templates. klaviyo.com
“Before working with Blue Corona, our website was old and basic... it really didn't match the image we wanted to portray in the market. We ended up choosing Blue Corona because they impressed us with their thorough research and understanding of our needs and our culture. The big benefit for us throughout the process was their ability to leverage their team's experience when we had an idea of what we wanted to do but didn't really know how to implement...”
Finally, when it comes to small business email marketing success, it’s incredibly important that you pay attention to the analytics information offered by your account provider. When you take the time to look at these numbers, you’ll be able to make decisions about the direction of your future email campaigns based on actual, measurable data – rather than half-formed guesses or blind stabs in the dark.
Customer reviews are the "social proof" that encourages people to join in on something. It's one thing for you to tell people to sign up for a campaign, but it's another thing for your happiest customers to say it too. Publish your best reviews from communities like Yelp right to your website. This adds genuine value to your landing pages when people are on the fence about submitting their contact information.
The above template is partially based on the “Break Through Email” system that’s been used to generate millions of dollars in sales for it’s founder, as well as his students of the course. The format is a bit different but it’s a good starting point to help you get results. To setup the landing page, you can use one of the recommended tools above like Lead Pages, or Unbounce, or Instapage. There’s also plenty of free HTML templates online you can download. Cold Email Case Study Years ago, I used cold email campaigns to generate leads via… surveys. Yes, I was obnoxious (and scrappy enough) to email strangers — but I did it out of love! (or ignorance haha) I knew a lot less about how to be an effective marketer back then, but I was willing to try just about anything without assuming “oh that just wouldn’t work.” So, when I was working on building a previous company, I sent an email to several thousand restaurant owners with a link to fill out a 5 question Google survey. That campaign received a response rate just over 1%. I sent the campaign just to collect some research data for a whitepaper I was writing at the time on how weather and other factors affect restaurant sales. About 2 years later, I ran a similar experiment, emailing business owner (with no personalization or any strategic thought in how to target it) and received relatively the same response rate. Keep in mind, in both of these situations, I was taking value rather than giving it (but still getting results!). If you try this strategy and offer something for free THAT IS VALUABLE and to a TARGETED group of people (as you should, otherwise you’re just spamming), you can expect to see a much higher response rate. However, I urge you not to abuse this. Otherwise you’ll poison the well for other companies and hurt your own brand.
Maropost – Maropost is a provider of on-demand digital marketing solutions. Its platform transforms the complex process behind successful email marketing into a manageable task, enabling users to segment and target prospects, craft content, optimize message delivery, track customer behavior, and create collaborations within a single dashboard. maropost.com
These metrics give you a high-level overview of how your subscribers are interacting with your campaigns and allow you to compare the success of one campaign to another. If you want to go deeper and see the exact people who opened and clicked your campaign, what links they clicked, etc. you can do so by choosing some of the other reports from the right hand side menu.
One little-known fact is that 66% of all emails in the U.S. are opened on mobile devices such as smartphones or tablets. If you’ve been considering using a text message or SMS campaign, email marketing might actually be a better choice for you. Email marketing works pretty much the same way as SMS marketing, but you can reach desktop users as well and most smartphone users find emails to be less bothersome than text messages from companies.
☑ Autoresponders (and automation) – Because you don’t want to be manually sending a welcome email every time someone signs up for your service! Autoresponders are an absolutely crucial part of small business email marketing (think order confirmations, renewal reminders etc). And if you want to take them to the next level, choose a tool that offers advanced automations, such as web-triggered campaigns and lead scoring.
This is a new concept that I’m developing and working to implement right now. I subscribe to dozens of newsletters and read a wide blogs, but I have never seen ANYONE do anything close this idea, with maybe one exception (which I’ll show you in a second). “The VIP Treatment” is my term for a strategy where you treat existing email subscribers differently when they visit your blog versus non-email subscribers. Specifically, here’s what you do:
The ethical bribe is not only intended to build your email list but also your credibility too. It’s your opportunity to demonstrate your knowledge in your niche and connect with your audience on a personal level. For this site I use The Super Affiliate Handbook. On that note, if you’re not already on my list please click here and go get this valuable free report now.
While this is mostly just a legacy feature from pre-Zapier times, the native integrations can enable connections that are not possible on Zapier. Our recommendation would be to search on Zapier for the tools that you currently use, and if they’re all on there, choose one of the email marketing tools above that provides the most triggers and actions.
Your tip about CTA’s really hit the spot. I’ve been noticing that some of our competitors are using wordy yet highly specific buttons like ‘Get My Free Consultation Now!’ or ‘See Other Works From ____’. I was skeptic at first, but reading your logic behind it, it makes sense. I’m looking forward to implementing this on my own sites. Thank you, Brian.
Figuring out when your visitor is ready to convert depends on your website viewers’ behavior, so you’ll want to conduct A/B testing to determine where you need to place your CTA. Does it work best towards the bottom of a blog page, when it slides out to the right, or does it get higher conversions at the beginning of the page, sliding out from the left?
2016 was a tremendous year for web-based services & software, including e-commerce and web-creation platforms. This is overall good for us, the consumers, as competition between these providers ensures a better product, lower price points and more versatility in the long run. Be sure to stick with known brands which offer low monthly payments and even free plans.

Trent: So the investment arm of the bank in Nova Scotia, we have five big banks in Canada and I’m not in Canada anymore. I’m in San Diego now, but back then. And our banking system is very different than the US. So five big banks, so instant credibility by association by name dropping in case they hadn’t heard of this major firm that I was with, they had definitely heard of the bank that owned it. Ten ways to save tax through your investments. Well, all business owners want to save tax and presumably they have some investments. And I want to see if you might find any value in receiving a copy not do you want a copy.
The ad exchange puts the offer out for bid to demand-side platforms. Demand side platforms act on behalf of ad agencies, who sell ads which advertise brands. Demand side platforms thus have ads ready to display, and are searching for users to view them. Bidders get the information about the user ready to view the ad, and decide, based on that information, how much to offer to buy the ad space. According to the Internet Advertising Bureau, a demand side platform has 10 milliseconds to respond to an offer. The ad exchange picks the winning bid and informs both parties.
Even if at first you do not succeed, the relaxing acoustic soundtrack and bright art style in this bridge building game will make you feel somewhat better about the watery graves you have just made for your poor passengers – as we found in our Poly Bridge review. With 24 challenges in the base version and hundreds more on Steam Workshop, Poly Bridge will keep you entertained for hours.
Offering a free tools report is a quite common opt-in bribe. I’ve experimented with it a bit and had success to a limited degree, but there are 2 prominent cases where offering a tools report worked extremely well. Lead Pages Clay Collins and the guys over at Lead Pages recently published a blog post where they showed the highest optin landing page they tested to grow their own email list, and it was a a free tools report. The full video explanation is below, but the jist of it is this. Creating an “optin bride” like this can take as little as 30 minutes, it doesn’t have to be complicated, it just has to be something people WANT. And the reason why it works so well is because people understand the offer (“tools” is a much clearer word than “resources”) plus, it’s a low commitment offer (perhaps why in some contexts, this kind of offer would beat a free course offer).
Split testing, also referred to often as A/B testing, is one of the most effective ways to increase your conversions. A split test on your website means to run a randomized test with two or more design variations being shown to different visitors. The “winning” design variation is the one that get you more results (clicks, email optins, purchases). Split testing makes a lot of sense for websites with 10,000+ visitors per month, so for that reason you should question whether this is the right strategy (right now) to help you grow your email list. That being said, I have developed a concept called Micro A/B Testing which you might want to try out instead if your website is not yet ready for split tests. If / when your website is ready, here are 5 tools you can use to make split testing your landing pages or email optin forms / popups easy:
Email marketing has become an essential tool for business ever since the introduction of the Internet to the world, however some campaigns that make it through to our inboxes are absolute rubbish that we don’t take any notice of. This article seeks to explain what email marketing really is, why companies should use it and how they should go about doing so.
Personally I avoid pop-up boxes since they upset so many people and they’re also so 1990. I believe you never want to start your relationship with your subscribers by pissing them off. But if you disagree you’re welcome to test pop-ups on your site if you like to. Speaking of testing, I highly recommend you test several different opt-in forms on your site and keep track of which one converts at the highest rate. The AWeber dashboard will help you do just that, and there are tutorials on setting up split-testing opt-in forms there too.
AWeber has phone customer service, and MailChimp has an awful chat bot thing that tends to send you help guide links. AWeber’s customer service by phone is nothing short of great and worth every penny of $19. I am telling you, they will go the distance in answering the silliest of questions as well as the most complex. Being able to call an email marketing service with questions can seriously save you time and stress.
What we like: Automations are ActiveCampaign’s specialty, so the different automations on offer are almost limitless – you can build complex workflows based on email engagement, web events, and events in third-party tools (e.g. purchases or support tickets). Segmentation features are advanced, with the ability to use automations to organize people into lists. As you’d expect, the reports are excellent, with options to view reports on deals, automations and contact trends. And finally, ActiveCampaign have consistently performed well in our deliverability tests. Solid choice, all around.
Weebly is a great software. The high rating says that other people are also satisfied with it which is always nice. I have a free account there and I like creating websites with it. I’m still considering upgrading to a premium package. However, I’m still not sure how I’ll create my site – I might use a blank template. About WordPress and other CMS options, I think that browsing through the hundreds, upon thousands of available themes could is very time consuming, and results in failure of finding the right theme for a certain subject, which leads to confusion. Getting started with a service just makes you take action, it surely helped me.
Flowvella is available on the Mac App Store as a desktop application. It provides a simple interface (certainly cleaner than Microsoft PowerPoint and somewhat similar to Apple Keynote) and some very nice design templates, which set good grounds so you can start building a nice looking set of slides on top of them. This is by far their biggest strength! If you want to start from scratch, however, you might feel a little lost creating something that looks good.
But since you can’t just judge a message’s quality by your own perceptions (as the members of your list will have diverse interests and viewpoints), you can also take a look at the analytics information provided by your email marketing account provider to see which messages have been opened and which emails have been accessed most frequently. This should give you some insight into the message topics your audience finds most compelling.
Consider this: the average open rate for email is 21.73 percent, while Facebook organic reach has decreased to about 6 percent. Think you might have better luck with Twitter? One marketer found that less than 2 percent of his followers actually see his tweets. So while social media may be an awesome tool for reaching new people, email may take the cake in terms of lead nurturing.
7: Security & compliance – If you have European citizens on your email list, you need to ensure that you’re email marketing tool is GDPR compliant. If you’re capturing particularly sensitive data (or are of a certain size), you may need to consider higher security standards. In this short section, we’ve briefly compared the security features & compliance standards (such as HIPAA, GDPR, ISO). If this is gobbledegook to you, don’t worry – skip straight over this section.
What we liked: SendInBlue’s prices are hard to beat, with their lowest plan starting at $25/month for up to 40,000 subscribers. And the fact that you get so much for the little you pay is incredible. For instance, we love that you can send transactional emails (invoices, password resets) straight from the tool. Automations are also pretty advanced, with options to build campaigns based on email clicks, opens, and web visits.
When you create a Mailchimp account, we automatically set you up with a no-cost Forever Free plan. This option allows you to experiment with our tools and figure out how to best use our platform. So if you’re just getting off the ground, this is one less cost you have to consider. You can remain on the Forever Free plan as long as you have 2,000 or fewer subscribers across all lists in your account.
3. Email converts better. People who buy products marketed through email spend 138% more than those who do not receive email offers. In fact, email marketing has an ROI of 3800%. That’s huge! And if you are wondering if social media converts even better, think again: the average order value of an email is at least three times higher than that of social media.
Improve collaboration across your organization — Sharing digital information modeling for buildings is far easier than passing drawing sets back and forth between colleagues. The cloud-based model of many BIM solutions also means that colleagues working on different parts of the design and building process can access BIM models anywhere, at any time. As many colleagues as needed can review and mark up the model before the building is erected.
Check out Pure360 – from their website it seems like they have both SMS services and integration with Salesforce. I can’t vouch for their service as I’ve never used it, although I did used to live about two minutes from their offices in Brighton! The other option would be something like Infusionsoft. I’m pretty certain that they have SMS functionality, and would be very surprised if they didn’t integrate with Salesforce.
Email marketing applies old strategies to new tools. Even though email is new, the basic content of an email ad is no different than the print advertising that has been around for a century. Finding ways to use pictures, text, and special offers to make people want to buy a product has been the mission of marketers for as long as there has been marketing. As such, getting a degree in marketing is one of the best ways to prepare potential marketers for running effective email campaigns.
I am happy to also ask for a plug for my family’s apparel website in the opener of said post if you think this post suggestion is a good idea. Shameless I know…..LOL! But hey maybe it will get your fans to keep submitting ideas. There might be something here to channel your fan base to get us to help your business. Think it over…..You really have reached Malcolm Gladwell Tribe status. And have done a great job with that. At this point whatever you asked the tribe to do they would deliver for you.
How is 7.5 okay? I think that it’s a great score, especially when you take into consideration that it’s an averaged score of several hundred people’s opinion… Shopify and BigCommerce (I don’t agree that they should have the same score) are very good builders. Yes, they are only for stores, and there are different free website creators that might take their place due to them being free, but they do their job very well. It’s better to be a master at a trade, unlike the other builders – jack of all trades, master of none.
Now that we’ve covered our laundry list of various platforms—do you know what features you should be looking for in an email marketing platform? If you don’t actually understand what email marketing can do, you might find yourself choosing your software based solely on branding, price, or pretty templates. And that’s no way to make a major business decision!
