The bulk of the money that I earn through blogging and Instagram is through sponsored collaborations. Essentially, a brand or shop will provide me with one or more products and I will incorporate them into an Instagram or blog post (or two, or three). How do you go about getting sponsored collaborations? By working with brands that reach out to you and/or by reaching out to your favourite brands to see if they want to collaborate.
Natalie Mortimer and Holly Erickson are the women behind The Modern Proper. There are dozens of affiliate marketing programs available which you can sign up with. Therefore, you need to choose the correct niche for you. If you known to trend on Instagram because of fashion, then you should choose a fashion affiliate program. Like any social media platform, increasing followers, views, engagement, and CTRs are a function of user activity. Posting at least once daily should be your goal. Using hashtags makes your content more discoverable. You should add ten to twenty hashtags to every post without appearing spammy. I have my hashtags ready to copy and paste in a memo on my phone. Check out your competition to understand what hashtags they use and discover the most popular hashtags with a tool like RiteTag. Lastly, you might want to buy followers or use marketing automation and bots to attract people to your profile. For differing opinions on these topics, search for “buying IG followers, “IG bots,” and “IG automation.”
On the other hand this experiment could be helpful if taken with a large grain of salt – I can see how this can inspire marketing ideas for consumer /lifestyle brands. I’ll be looking into some of the things you mentioned for a consumer client of mine who’s demographic is perfectly in the Instagram space. Minus the bikini models though – that’s just not my style 😉
It’s highly advisable when working with influencers in your affiliate program to work out an agreement with them where they get some free product and create their own content for their feed featuring your product. Followers are a lot more likely to engage with a sponsored post that has a personal touch attached to it. The ultimate reason we work with influencers in the first place is because they influence people to buy certain products. There’s no better way to do this than with a personalized post consisting of product you gave to them.

There’s a lot of guys like Dan Bilzerian who’ve built significant followings from Instagram. Another one worth keeping an eye on is Timothy Skyes. His brand on Instagram is a bit tamed down when you compare it to Dan but still has done well for his business. I think Instagram is a great opportunity for personal branding but it’s important to ensure that your brand is aligned with what you’re actually all about.
Before we can get into affiliate links, first we need to talk about the affiliate program. An affiliate program is hosted by a company that wants to use marketers who are not employed by the company to promote their product or service. These marketers, and their social media accounts, are often related to the product or niche in some way. For example, a health blogger might sign up for an affiliate program promoting vitamins.

Merch by Amazon – If you use Merch by Amazon then you don’t need to set up your own online store – all products are simply displayed on Amazon’s website. Simply upload your artwork to your Amazon Merch account, and add the product information and price. Amazon will then create a product page for your work, and when you receive orders they will print and ship. (Merch by Amazon only prints onto T-shirts and is only available in the US).
