Of course, there is always an exception, and that exception is YouTube, Google’s social media darling. While I still prefer to work with influencers who have both a website AND a social media channel, I will take YouTube-only influencers. The in-depth content, high engagement and optimization potential for videos allow them to be an excellent standalone for affiliate marketing. The influencer below does not have a blog but remains a top performer due to niche and high-quality content.

There’s not quite as much consensus online with what is a good rate to charge for a blog post. Some say $100 per 10,000 monthly page views (not uniques) is a good starting point, others create a rate based on the number of hours you put into each post (at least $50 per hour for post creation, $100 per hour for photography). I would say take both of these into consideration. If you have 10,000 monthly page views but spend 10 hours putting each post together, that would be just above minimum wage if you went with the first calculation. That’s hardly worth your time. I would say the minimum you should charge for a lifestyle post with beautiful photography is $200 plus $100 per 10,000 monthly page views. It would surprise me if you can spit out a blog post – photography, editing, writing – in under 4 hours and your time is absolutely worth $50 / hour. That’s just my personal opinion though, coming from a very visual (and time-intensive) lifestyle blog.

Depth of discussion – lots of comments on a post may look impressive but look deeper to see what the followers are saying. Find an influencer who engages properly with the audience who in turn respond through discussion. Ten comments that are meaningful and stimulate a conversation are more useful than 100 comments purely complimenting the post. Follow this concept through to the types of posts that get the most likes; are they relevant to your business, or are they all favouring posts with a lighter tone or images?

Coupon codes have always been an effective way to get people to buy something. Influencers like @cassieandrewsstyle has a product photograph, and in the blurb she includes a coupon. If it is an exclusive coupon code, then it has more draw because the discount is better than a normal coupon code. Not all coupon codes require a click to be tracked by an affiliate network, which is great news for these affiliates who want to promote an exclusive code but don’t want to include a link.
Once you reach a certain level of growth, the more you’re going to be inundated with e-mails and there may come a point in time when you feel like you’re spending all of your time answering e-mails rather than doing any actual work that brands want to hire you for. This is where a talent agency can help you. Having @BussinessPeopleInc (64k followers) or accounts like that post a quote of yours or something will probably reach your target demo much more effectively than trying to replicate accounts like Dan B’s.
