An Instagram Influencer is an Instagram user who has an established audience on Instagram, and who is able to persuade others because of their level of trustworthiness and reach on Instagram. Instagram influencers can help you build a massive audience from scratch in a relatively short period of time — while potentially generating a lot of sales just by featuring your products on their profiles.
Affiliate marketing now faces a critical transition: with social media becoming increasingly shopper-friendly, bloggers are dropping their websites for Instagram fame. After previously relying on “publishers” to drive traffic for clients as part of an affiliate program, affiliate-focused agencies must now quickly get up to speed on new tactics, social platforms, and strategies to serve brands who are now seeking more comprehensive results from a diverse range of channels – not just web. With consumers swiping up on Instagram Stories to shop the looks of their favorite social media influencers, the convenience of shopping via social media is increasingly becoming the norm for shoppers looking to purchase on-the-go. Those affiliate marketers who are still only investing in website publishers and click-through metrics now run the risk of missing broad swaths of new customers and business on social.
Tip #3 is to consistently post valuable content to your followers. Now valuable content will be different in each niche, but a good rule of thumb is to post inspiring, helpful, informative or motivational pictures and videos at least once a day. If you’re struggling to come with ideas on what to post just go look at what other influencers in your niche are posting, and post similar content. Of course you’ll want to make it unique, but looking at other accounts is a good way to figure out what type of posts the people in your niche respond to the most. An important thing for to mention here is to avoid making your account a pitch fest. Of course your goal is to get people to click the links in your bio, but if you make every other post about an offer or a link all your going to do is piss people off, and ultimately lose followers. I’ve found that one promotional post per week is the sweet spot to not piss off your followers, but make sure they know you have an offer out there.
Follow these six tips for list creation prior to sending out a single outreach email and watch your new affiliate revenue increase. Influencer recruitment has its challenges but is well worth the effort. With incremental revenue, increased brand equity and a higher percentage of new customers, a qualified influencer quickly turns into a top performer in your program.
Your strategies were really interesting. I hadn’t considered using my instagram quite that way. I actually have been having a lot of success using it to build my list, and not only that – my open rates stay at 40% or higher from the subscribers I generate from it. I grew my email list to about 40K in 6 months with my account running free events – in my case fitness challenges. It has been super effective for really connecting with my audience, as I get to be more personal and interactive with them and offer them great content daily that they engage with and it strengthens the connection they have to my brand. I’m around 118K on insta and I just really love the app. I will say in the past 6 months or so I’ve noticed less engagement than I did last year – and that may be because more and more people are using the app, especially in the health and fitness space. But it is still a great way to build celebrity, establish credibility, connect with and build your tribe and really make an impact on people on a personal level. I can’t go anywhere without being recognized from Instagram, it’s happened everywhere I’ve been in the last 2 years from Austin to Denver to San Francisco – I mean, who is ever without their “life device” aka phone these days….I did a cool podcast about how I’ve been using it for James Schramko a few months back if you want to listen to some of the ways I’ve been using it. http://www.superfastbusiness.com/business/how-to-grow-your-instagram-audience-with-betty-rocker/

And another big reason? Cost. Most of the big Influencers work solely on a pay-per-post model, where companies have to shell out hundreds of thousands of dollars for a single Instagram post. Sure, maybe you’re Pepsi and you have that sort of spend. But we’re assuming most of you a) don’t want to spend anywhere near that much, and b) want to work with Influencers on a traditional affiliate marketing model (commission on sale). It goes without saying, it’s much more likely that micro-influencers will work on this model.
While the world of Instagram influencers and how we utilize them to market our products is still very young, we have been able to cover several great ways to get the most out of these powerful players within your affiliate program. Good luck with all your affiliate marketing efforts and feel free to email us or comment below with any ideas or questions.
One thing I found odd with Clickbank is that to register, your IP address needs to match the country of the home address you are inputting. If you are traveling around, this makes it hard to register for an account. My application was immediately denied because although my home address is in Canada, my IP was coming from Europe as I was currently traveling when I applied for Clickbank.
An influencer can also choose to shorten the non-linkable URL that they include in their Instagram post by using bit.ly. If we “bit.ly” this link to AP’s blog, www.accelerationpartners.com/blog, it would look like http://bit.ly/1SwgojI. The affiliate simply inputs their affiliate link into a link shortener tool to get the shortened link. The Instagram follower would then copy/paste this link into their browser which would redirect them through an affiliate link to the merchants site.

Many marketers use automated email and drip sequences to introduce affiliate products and services to their subscribers. I use an auto-response sequence through MailerLite, a top-rated email marketing service and a fantastic alternative to MailChimp. You could send new subscribers three to five automated emails over a period of weeks/months and include affiliate links where applicable. Additionally, I see many marketers using landing page tools like Leadpages and Instapage to get subscribers and sales.

Nordstrom Rack’s recent partnership with Shopping Links is an outstanding example how influencer marketing can be coupled with affiliate marketing to drive not only brand awareness but also traffic and sales. By utilizing the Shopping Links Influencer marketplace, Nordstrom Rack was able to simplify the process of identifying and gifting influencers at scale. Individually-selected Influencers created a series of social media posts supported with blog posts to showcase Nordstrom Rack’s products to more than 500,000 potential customers.

Next, on your Facebook page, select Shop > Add Product. Here you can add product images as well as the name, price, description, and the URL for the product page or checkout page. Don’t skimp on the description here, as these are the details your audience will see on Instagram when they tap for more information on the product. The more information you provide, the more likely Instagrammers will click through to your site and make a purchase.

A common issue with Instagram influencers is finding a way to get customers to click on affiliate links. It’s common to see captions include “link in the bio,” but this is an extra step that sometimes customers don’t take. Thus, there could be sales that came from this influencer that they’re not getting credit for. This is bad for the influencer because they’re losing out on commissions and this is bad for the brand because you’re not able to properly track the success of their campaigns. This is where forced exclusive unique coupon codes come in.
To be a leader in affiliate marketing, networks and agencies must recognize that advertisers are seeking more than just one-off leads or incremental sales. They want advocates and storytellers who can engage potential shoppers, demonstrate vertical expertise, and strengthen brand loyalty to inspire a long-term relationship. Influencers allow brands to take advantage of all the benefits of affiliate marketing, including transparency and guaranteed exposure while adding the power to connect with shoppers and strengthen brand affinity. Affiliate marketing is a proven channel, strengthened by its access to data and quantifiable results. The opportunity is now for both advertisers and their affiliate networks to embrace influencer marketing and make it as cost-effective and transparent as they have affiliate marketing. In this case, the whole – affiliate marketing and influencer marketing – is definitely greater than the sum of its parts.
Keep in mind that even with offers to pay these Influencers, it’s still a numbers game (though money definitely talks). So keep sending these emails out and you’ll get responses soon enough. Start with a goal of 25 emails a week. It’s normal to get only several response from these emails, so don’t worry about low response rates too much. Tweak your pitch and keep at it.
As for Instagram, having a business account makes it even easier for brands to contact you but I would personally shy away from switching since there’s a lot of whisper in the blogging world that Instagram will soon make business accounts pay to get their content seen by anyone.
