Leveraging influencers tends to provide more marketing possibilities along with additional revenue, conversions, and customers with minimal effort involved for advertisers. Start by focusing on influential publishers that have a reach into the customers or niche you’re looking to tap into and initiate outreach by sharing an opportunity to collaborate. The already existing prominence that influencers have in affiliate marketing is steadily growing and now is the perfect time to incorporate them into your strategy.
We’ll use an example of a fictional fashion influencer, and we’ll call her Sally. Sally lives in Los Angeles and has around a million subscribers across her primary social media channels, Instagram, YouTube, and Snapchat. Now let’s pretend that you’re an advertiser for a boutique clothing line with a store located along the coast in Orange County looking to tap into a younger niche market. Influencers like Sally would be great to add leverage to your marketing since her promoting your brand would automatically gain credibility from her subscribers, in addition to increasing your customer base and conversions.
Create an Engaged Community – An engaged community, that comment on, like, and share your posts is key to becoming a successful influencer. To create this type of community you will need to put in the work – constantly and consistently post high-quality images that interest and inspire your audience, ask questions, respond to comments, and become a well-known figure within your niche.
Instagram (IG) is many things. It has over 800 million users, and Instagrammers have deep pockets. For example, among adult users, 31 percent make over $75,000 annually. IG users “like” over 4.2 billion and share 95 million posts daily. Zuckerberg and company got the IG acquisition correct along with WhatsApp (the jury is still out on Oculus VR). IG is moving in the right direction and stomping on their competitors like Snap. Storylines like these make affiliate marketers drool except for one problem, IG is link-unfriendly.
If you want to target a specific group of people instead of your entire audience, then use affiliate marketing. If you’re launching a new product feature or an entirely new product that power users will be receptive to, use affiliate marketing to target specific sites that these power users spend time on. Instead of marketing to everyone, you speak to the people most likely to use your product.
If you focus on a niche that has a highly engaged following it is more likely to be successful. @afterpay obsession is one of those affiliates. It is for people who want to shop at stores that offer Afterpay. If a brand has any great promotions, they will let their users know so they can grab the bargain and pay in installments. They have a very active Facebook page but they use their Instagram page to highlight products, but also to encourage brands to work with them.
As for Instagram, having a business account makes it even easier for brands to contact you but I would personally shy away from switching since there’s a lot of whisper in the blogging world that Instagram will soon make business accounts pay to get their content seen by anyone. Whether you are a brand or an influencer, creating a good Instagram profile isn’t as easy as it sounds. In principle it’s simple - take a good photo, upload it, add a filter and upload it. However, some of the most successful accounts have taken steps to make sure their Instagram stands out from the crowd so that they can gain more followers, and if they are an influencer, it paves the way for big brands to want to work with them to reach a wider audience.
Shopping on Instagram has been around for about a year, but has been reserved only for select businesses based in the US. However, in March 2018, Instagram rolled out Shopping on Instagram across the globe. This feature is now available for 45+ countries and counting. It is also accessible to any business or influencer who has an Instagram Business account (although you will first need to get your account approved for shopping).
Next, on your Facebook page, select Shop > Add Product. Here you can add product images as well as the name, price, description, and the URL for the product page or checkout page. Don’t skimp on the description here, as these are the details your audience will see on Instagram when they tap for more information on the product. The more information you provide, the more likely Instagrammers will click through to your site and make a purchase.
The approach you choose should also depend on how much you’re willing to spend. A larger budget allows you to partner with larger influencers who can get you as much exposure as possible. However, influencer marketing is known to be expensive. Another option is to target micro-influencers in your niche who don’t have millions of followers but have thousands of highly engaged followers.

While affiliate marketing has long been driven by a need to gain website clicks, this channel is now quickly evolving into a strategy that cultivates leads from social channels like Instagram and Facebook. Instrumental in this evolution are influencers: as social leaders with the ability to inspire conversions from their loyal followers, they are now forming an integral component of successful affiliate campaigns.
Facebook users may be declining, but there are still billions of users to segment and target. In the example below, the influencer goes one step further than simply showing the products she’s promoting. She also includes a video overview of her experience. This approach is important because followers don’t have to make a decision based solely on her word: they can watch her use the product and make a decision based on that. Using video also gives an authentic feel to the campaign because it’s easier for followers to imagine that this influencer uses these products.
