Affiliate Marketing is where you promote someone else’s product and earn a compensation when you refer sales. So you, basically, find products that appeal to your audience, promote these products (or services) to others, and earn either a percentage or a flat amount on each sale that you generate for the merchants that you promote. You don’t get to dictate the price of the product or the commission earned. For example, if you decide to run a fitness site, you could promote fitness related products – gym gear and supplements. You join “XYZ Supplements” affiliate program. You write a review on your site about the product and include your affiliate links. Someone clicks on the link, gets redirected to the merchant’s website, buys the product, conversions are tracked, products are shipped to the customer, and you get paid! So you don’t have any of the headaches of selling products – your only job is to write a post and market to your audience.
As you can see, there are advantages and disadvantages to both Affiliate Marketing and Dropshipping and there is no right or wrong answer when it comes to deciding what to choose. It really comes down to your personal preference and what you want to achieve. With Dropshipping, the product is key and there are a lot of logistical headaches that I outlined. Affiliate Marketing, can run passively and can generate income for years to come. I may be a little biased.

A lot of times, vendors will go negative during the first sale, but know their backend so well, that they can recover a lot of that revenue post-transaction, or on a continuity basis, based on your stick rate. Knowing and understanding the lifetime value of your customer will be huge in determining the payout,” DeHerrera said.
When dropshipping products, you can easily retarget your audience to help convert the sale. With affiliate marketing, since you’re sending the traffic to another website, you have no control over retargeting. With dropshipping, the traffic comes to your own website. Also, you have control over the optimization of your landing pages, product copy, website design and more. The checkout will also match your website’s branding. As you have more control, you better your odds of attracting a customer and converting them.

This is the standard affiliate marketing structure. It is important to work with many different merchants in your niche and promote a wide range of products. This affiliate marketing strategy will diversify the amount of commissions you make and create a steady stream of revenue when building an affiliate website. 
Unlike with advertising networks, you’ll rarely be rejected when applying to an affiliate network or program based solely on your audience size. Dropshipping is where you curate and list products on your site. So in this example, you create a store of products but you are the middleman. You take orders, handle payment processing and customer service issues but the manufacturer ships the product for you. So instead of having a warehouse and holding product and all the costs associated with that, you partner with a drop shipper who stocks and ships the inventory. You get to set your own product price. So you basically buy wholesale and mark up the prices. Suppliers will suggest a retail price and you need to see what similar products are selling for so that you don’t price yourself out of the market. But, you get to decide what you want to charge!
Think about this. If you are the person that processes that order, again you are making more money the first time you process it. Yes, there is a little bit more work, but you also own that customer data. So if you want to sell a box of 10 pens as an upsell or if you want to sell them new notebooks or if you want to have a huge Black Friday sale, you are the one that’s marketing to that same person.

They manage all of the affliate merchants for me and I leverage an online portal to send customers through. And I can link that portal to my blogs, facebook page, twitter, etc. They manager over 3,000 partner stores and it seems to be growing everyday. Pretty cool so far. I love to shop online so this was a great business opportunity for me. And they have their own brokered products too. I think affliate marketing is just going to keep growing as businesses go from brick and mortar to click and order!
Create a bonus offer for a product that an affiliate is already marketing. For example, if one of your affiliates is selling a course on driving e-commerce sales from your Facebook fan page, you can write a short and useful step-by-step guide that complements the product, such as the fundamentals of lead generation from Facebook.
